VLC Media Player (formerly VideoLAN Customer) is a free media player that supports a wide range of music and video formats, including MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, MP3, and OGG, as well as DVDs, VCDs, and a number streaming protocols. On a high bandwidth network, it can also be used as a server for unicast or multicast broadcasts over IPv4 or IPv6.
VLC 2.1 is a major improvement for VLC 2021, with a new audio core, hardware decoding and encoding, porting to mobile devices, preparation for Ultra-HD video, and a focus on additional format support .
To improve VLC audio compatibility, Rincewind includes a new audio rendering pipeline with improved efficiency, volume, and device handling. It adds support for a variety of new devices, formats and metadata, as well as improving the majority of existing ones for codecs new generation.
