Protection

Zone Alarm Free Antivirus has not been tested by large or even minor test labs, due to the fact that it uses the standard Kaspersky engine rather than one of its own.

ZoneAlarm's likely effectiveness can be gauged by looking at Kaspersky's own results in lab studies.
Kaspersky Internet Security ranked seventh out of 18 in AV-Comparatives' July-November 2018 Real-World Protection Test Summary. It passed all five tests without raising a single false alarm, outperforming all others. (Not a trivial point.) Trend Micro came in third, but it also generated 47 false positives. If you set the "suspicious" bar so high that many legal packages are detected, it's much easier to block threats.)

Although this is commendable, Avast Free Antivirus was ranked even higher in the report, tied for sixth. The difference in protection rates was minor (99,6% vs. 99,5%), but keep in mind that AV-Comparatives evaluated Kaspersky Internet Security in full. We wouldn't expect ZoneAlarm Free to provide the same level of protection, as it just has the Kaspersky antivirus engine.

Kaspersky Internet Security is included in AV-December Test's 2018 Home User Report, rather than ZoneAlarm or even Kaspersky Free. Kaspersky Internet Security blocked 100% of threats, but the results tell us nothing about ZoneAlarm's reduced security.

As a final check, we used a unique ransomware simulator that we created ourselves to evaluate ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus. We weren't surprised to learn that our test threat was removed before it could encrypt a single file, as we had seen Kaspersky Antivirus do so in his own study.

What surprised us was that ZoneAlarm didn't issue any alerts or log entries in response to the detection. We believe this is due to a lack of integration between the ZoneAlarm UI and the Kaspersky engine, but whatever the cause, it's a problem. If your antivirus just blocked a ransomware attack, we think you should know about it immediately, rather than watch the executable disappear without explanation.
